Tankshal Market has a long history dating back to the era of Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. Tankshal Bazar, as it was known at the time, was a center for vendors selling a range of commodities, including spices, textiles, and handicrafts. The place was established yet were not connected to each other. In order to connect these small regions Akbar wanted to establish relation between them. Hence, he started the trade exchange, but the problem being, it was very difficult to supply silver empire coins from Delhi – the Capital, to Ahmadabad so the mint trade was constructed by printing the Sultanates’ silver coin in here– The royal mint, Tankshal.

The market gained in popularity throughout time and became a key trading destination for local businesses. During British administration in the nineteenth century, the market was extensively renovated and reconstructed to meet the expanding demands of the local populace.

Throughout the early twentieth century, the market experienced a substantial change as traders from other regions of India, mainly Gujarat and Rajasthan, began to relocate to Ahmedabad and establish their enterprises. This resulted in increased market attractiveness and the introduction of new items such as traditional fabrics and handicrafts.
